SnakeAwake Performance Group
Live Performance in Hamburg City - 20. + 21. July
SnakeAwake Concept
A pop-up dance show with African live music
Embark on a mesmerising journey with SNAKEAWAKE, where ancient myths meet contemporary creativity in a vibrant dance and theatre performance. Inspired by a Yoruba creation myth, this production resonates across the globe, celebrating the snake as a powerful symbol of tolerance and diversity.
Why SNAKEAWAKE?
The SnakeAwake performance emerges as an artistic response to the Ritual Dance Pedagogy.
It draws inspiration from the Yoruba creation myth and the elements of the Orisha, who are divine entities from West Africa that embody various aspects of the natural and spiritual worlds.
A long time ago, the gods and spirits ruled the heavens, whilst humans and animals ruled the Earth. Like oil and water, the two worlds did not mix. But one day, the serpent decided to unite them, transforming his long body into a rainbow, and thus connecting heaven and earth. It is said that since then, humans and the divine are eternally one.
Different interpretations of this creation myth can today be heard in the Americas, the Caribbean and the whole African diaspora. In fact, in many indigenous cultures, from Indian to Greco-Roman, Chinese and Native American, the snake is a powerful symbol of tolerance and diversity; and of the connection between the material and spiritual world.
It is this meaning that is ascribed to Snake Awake, a co-created transcultural dance and devised theatre performance with live music that brings back ritual as a central element of culture. By bridging artistic excellence with participatory practices, Snake Awake offers a space for both personal and collective transformation.
Performance Event
Snake Awake is a 30-minute site specific performance that will take place in various locations (initially in Hamburg) in the style of a flash mob in July 2024. It includes: eight dancers; two live musicians; two vocalists and playback tracks.
