Mary Joy

The Hamburg singer has worked with the Bangoura Group since 2018. Mary’s musical influences are Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Garry Moore, Lauren Hill, Erikah Badu and Sade. She studied jazz singing and the piano at Taller de musics in Barcelona and jazz singing in Freiburg. Concerts in Spain, France and India made her into a professional artist capable or adapting to fit various bands and cultures.

Mary’s soul-jazz voice inspired the Bangoura Group to create a new fusion sound based on African improvisation: always moving with the moment, surprising, direct. As a singer the word ‘soul’ encapsulates Mary’s style. Her smoky voice conveys a fervour which reaches the listener at a spiritual level. Mary also accompanies the educational group Tanzpädogogik in Hamburg with live music.

She writes her own lyrics and compositions. Together with her band, she is currently recording her album: Bobby Martinez (Saxophone), Audun Waage (Trumpet), Claudio Vera Valladares (Guitar), Oliver Carsten (Bass), Tillman Günther (Klavier), Felix Lehrmann (Percussion).
